520 | _aThe late 20th century has witnessed unrestrained urbanisation in less development countries. Although experiences in many poorer places have shown unequal relationship between urbanisation and development, more urbanised regions are usually more developed at micro-level. In the meantime, cities and city regions are spaces where socio-economic inequality emerged and continuously augmented. Spatial inequality in development is also observed at various scales segmenting countries into regions and, regions into sub-regions. This book explores the causes and patterns of urbanisation in one of the least developed regions in India-the Northeast India. Besides, emperical researches on spatial pattern of development and the nature of relationship between urbanisation and various dimensions of development have been conducted and analyzed at district level. As this book is also intended to serve the needs of students and research scholars, leading theoretical approaches on urbanisation and regional development have been discussed. It also provides different perspectives on the role of large cities in the process of regional development. | ||
