Summary: This great survey of English Literature, by two French Scholars, from the seventh century to the present time, has a reputation second to none for comprehensive, accuracy and readability. Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch said in his original preface to the work: 'The singular value of this present book lies in its enlargement of the vision to see our own literature, magnificent as it is, in European perspective-and this is not through direct comparison, but more winningly, almost insensibly, through the operation upon it of the critical minds trained in another great literature.' In 1964 Professor Las Vergnas, Professor of english at the sorbonne, contributed a new section, dealing with post world war I literature. This new material consisted of three chapters: The Novel and short -story' (including Belles- Letters), 'The Theatre' and 'Poetry'. In this edition each chapter has been revised to take stock of current writing. Thus in each of these three fields, Professor Las Vergnas analyses and puts into perspective the work of those writers whom he regards as significant in English Literature from 1914 to 1971. 'For its intelligence, learning, complete absence of bias, its accuracy and freshness, this book deserves our praise and our gratitude.
