| Summary, etc. | The popularity and appealof Hardy's Tess of the d' Urbervilles today is so much in sharp contrast with the severity and censure he recieved when his masterly evocation first appeared in serialized print in 1891.<br/> Tess Dirbeyfield is the charming daughter of a villager in the vale of blackmoor situated in Hardy's Wessex countryside. Her father is besotted by the notion of high lineage of the d'Urbervilles, perished local squires. An attempt to revive contact with a namesake kin by Tess' parents leads to her reluctant visit to their estate and results in her seduction, unleashing a torrent of suffering for Tess. Reminiscent of the author's own painful events in life, Tess, a victim of crass hypocrisy and double standards, becomes self-condemnatory. The powerful plot now develops into a compelling story set in a rural Victorian backdrop, as defenseless Tess struggles to balance her relationship with two vastly different men.<br/> Wilco has been bringing out the finest Classic titles since 1958.
